1. I've been lucky to have some great teachers in the area of big media and computer networks, notably Marc Canter and Adam Curry. Marc is the founder of Macromedia, the company that created Director, Shockwave, Flash and Dreamweaver; and Adam is one of the founders of MTV, and went on to become an early Internet entrepreneur. Both have new companies in 2001 to develop technologies that are related to the stuff we're doing at UserLand. I know that Marc and Adam spent a lot of time talking last year, so the ideas that I explain here are a mix of Marc, Adam and me, Dave Winer.
2. Also, I'd like to pay special homage to the Grateful Dead, who have generously allowed their creations to be used to bootstrap new technology in non-commercial ways. To get this process going, we need a content base to get started with. So many technologists, me included, love the music of the Dead. I think they may have left a legacy for technologists that's as important as the legacy they left in music.
